Why is my newly purchased Acer Palmatum Chitoseyama going brown and dry at the leaf edges? It's planted in a large tub and stands on the patio.

Japanese Acers need: semi shade, moist soil, don't tolerate wind. Most patios are in full sun so this may well be your problem.

Many thanks, Moongrower and Johnathan. I've moved them to a slightly shadier position, though I can do nothing about the wind.

If you have wind then your acer leaves will have windburn - sorry!

They tend to if placed in direct sun, and if they have a drying wind on them. Better I think if placed with a bit more shade and a less windy site. This I think is what went wrong with one of mine once.
