Hi Jennie,
I don't know why it happens, but have several armandii and every year the last year's growth produces flowers then appears to die back...before... really going for it!
I usually just cut off the 'dead' parts after they've gone brown and dry...by then there's usually a huge amount of lovely new healthy and vigorous growth!
