i have just got an acer, it is only about 14" tall just one stem with leaves that have gone brown at the edges, what is going on

The most common reason would be drought. It may be wet now but if it dried out earlier the leaves will brown at the edges. Equally, being too wet will also cause leaf damage but I would keep it watered and give it a chance. We also suffered a good deal of leaf damage from wind in the last few weeks but that is unlikely on a small plant.
