i have a cordyline australis all the leaves have turned brown and i have taken them off left with just the trunk now part of the trunk felt soft is my tree dead

Maybe. Thousands of Cordylines are looking the worse for wear all over the country. Examine the trunk all the way down and cut it off below the lowest rotten area. With a bit of luck it will reshoot, though you might have to wait til summer for this to happen. Good luck.
