May also have to resort to the hosepipe. If so, water slow, so it can soak in, and you don't waste any, and let it dry out partially before digging, so you don't wind up smearing the clay, and making it even harder--you want it to be crumbly, not doughy.

Has been a little dry recently. I use a very sharp garden fork for digging in hard ground.
