My gunnera is turning in to a bit of a beast and has lots of small crowns growing around the main one. I'd like to take one off to give to a friend - can i do this and if so how?

Yes, you can - my husband was brutal with a spade last year and simply chopped a piece off, then I potted it up. We had three smallish plants off the main one doing that.
