I would cut them both back to their desired framework about now. Leave long shoots trained onto the fence/trellis/whatever ready for flowers next year. Cut out a few old shoots right down to the base to encourage new ones to grow from low down. This can be quite a job on an old tangled mess! But they will both sprout back OK.
