Gardening in the Somme!
I'm on the Sussex coast - we've had only 8 days since the beginning of the year when it hasn't rained. We garden on virtually impermeable clay and the garden is continuously flooded.
Today I planted new potatoes into pots and just wading through the mud has worn me out.
The only plus point gardening here is that we have very few frosts - most winters none. It's always 2/3 degrees warmer than inland during the winter and similar amount cooler in the summer.
It seems gardeners world forum is closing so expect more visitors here.

As someone said, we are looking forward to the change from grey, wet days in winter, to the grey dry days of summer.
We have had to wait since the end of September to have our Drive recovered as it needed 2 consecutive dry days for the work to be done. Finally done last week, and even then we had to put a flame gun over the surface to get it dry before the work could begin.
Webbed feet, a necessity!

I now that feeling Mowerman. When I get to weed one of the bigger beds we liken it to Passchendaele if not overly wet and the Somme if it is very wet.

I have same here. It is exactly what you would fear the trenches to be like! I’m not even attempting to grow grass here. A lot of the houses on this development had lawn laid and now have mud. Nothing but mud. A landscaper recently informed my neighbour that if they wanted a lawn they would need to dig out a soak-away to stand a chance! It was a damp clay meadow covered n yellow flowers before the building machines compacted it all. The usual sad tale of a new-build home! My dream was to have a courtyard garden with no lawn, so I’m happy enough. I’ll be growing a lot of my plants in containers. I have never known such a wet winter. I am in north Dorset and it has rained almost every day since Mid September. Easing off a bit now though…please God!
