I plant mine Oct/Nov, sounds late but it's fine. I do put an old window or two over them supported by bricks to keep the winter wet off. Solent White is a superb variety, excellent keeper & flavour, good size bulbs. Bred for our climate. I send away for mine rather than buy them from garden centres. You will find the address on the net 'The Garlic Farm' they are growers on the Isle of White.
Avoid 'Elephant Garlic' if you want real garlic, it's not garlic, it's a leek.
