I moved into a neglected garden earlier in the summer and have been clearing and replanting. Both south and north sides are sheltered by mature trees (ash, oak, pine) and the house is to the east. Would it be a good idea to give the new plants a feed before the cooler weather arrives?

I'm with Eileen, wait until spring. Any feed, especially one containing Nitrogen will encourage new soft growth which will be burnt off by winter frosts.

welcome to GoY.
I personally would wait until spring. At this time of year most plants are 'closing' down for the winter and the feed will only wash away.
