I would take about 1/2-1 cm thick, 15-25 cm long cuttings in late fall, after leaf drop, dip them in rooting hormone powder, and insert them in pots of moist sand, and keep them in a cold frame or cold greenhouse--cloches may be enough--until they start to sprout in spring.
