I have a bee question and this is hard as ive got a pic on my phone but no way to put it on here,in my daughters garden today a bee was feeding on the buddleia about the size of my thumb,hard orange upper body and black and orange lower,never seen one like it before,ty chrus

I wonder if it is a Hornet mimic Hoverfly. I posted a photo of one in my garden recently. Should be on my GoY photos page.

I'd go for the Hornet hoverfly Volucella zonaria, the abdominal patterns are a good match. It is also one of the largest insects of this type in the UK.
