I did it for the first time this year. You will want to dig deep and get as much root as possible, then using your hands or a sharp knife, split them. You may want to dust the cut parts with a fungicide.
BUT... there is always a but... I would suggest you wait until early spring. They are about to go dormant, and if you do it now, how will you take care of them? In early spring, dig and divide.
