Make sure that you can't pull it up before you mow, and don't take off more than 1/3 the height at one mowing--i.e., if it is 6 cm high, don't mow it lower than 4 cm high.

If you're using a hover mower, you don't have to worry about the pulling up bit, but its usually around 4-6 weeks before it needs cutting anyway.
