I have had my berberis now for five years. It was a good shrub, about 5 feet high but during the hot summer in July some of the branches seem to have died and I am wondering what could be the cause of this pleae?

It could actually be a late effect from stem damage last winter. Many shrubs that have suffered this year if carefully inspected at the base of their stems have bark that has split or even been lifted back away from the wood below after tissues froze last January. The stems may have been hanging on and have only finally succumbed from more stress such as the dry summer in the south east and or subsequent bacterial infection through the damaged area.
