It's generally due to poor air circulation, incorrect watering, lack of sufficient sunlight. Clear away surrounding vegetation. Avoid overhead watering - sprinklers. Keep the leaves dry as possible watering only the roots & not the leaves. Give it more light by trimming over-hanging growth & surrounding growth. Thin out the crown for more air circulation.

Any chance of a photo or two? Have you cut them back yet?

Thanks for your reply l was wondering if I should cut them back and if I did would they come back again

If you haven't cut them yet, push the foliage out from the centre - you should be able to see new growth arising in there, and you don't want to cut that, just cut all the long and straggly growth off that was there before.
