how do you to tell the difference between weeds and new vegetable or flower starts

Answers

you can google images of your new seeds when they have germinated. if they are growing in rows that also helps.

you can post images on here and we will try to help. we are just happy growers on here not a professional advisory service though :o)

welcome to GoY too :o)

If you have not sown many kinds you could sow a few of each into pots and once they have their first true leaves (ie the second pair that appear) you can compare them with the ones you are worried about.

What veg have you sown?

Let them grow on a little so the difference will be obvious.

It might not if you are quite new to gardening though - eg could you tell a baby carrot from a baby cosmos if you'd never grown either before, apart from where you sowed it?

Label everything as you sow and keep the packet the seeds came in so that you can see what the plant should look like... We could never weed in the garden when the grand-children were young as they would then pull up things indiscriminately! The old adage is 'if it is hard to pull up it is a weed, if it pulls up easily it is a plant you want'! Unfortunately this is all too true and even after years of experience you will still, at times, pull up precious self-seeded plants thinking they are weeds...

Hi Mg, I wish I had £1 for every time I've heard that, Derek.

I used to do what Steragram said when sowing in open ground - sow some in a little pot or tray as well so you know what they're supposed to look like when they come up.

True but the problem comes when didn't do that because you thought you would remember....so easy to do even if you are only sowing a few sorts.

Dead right Stera! I have a mystery feathery annual coming up and can't for the life of me think what I sowed. A nice surprise I hope! And I can recognize my courgettes without difficulty but can't remember whether they are going to be the compact type or the rambling sort---it makes a difference when planting out-- but it's a guessing game this year!

My dahlias are coming up again that I was 'suppose' to dig up in the fall but never did. They are looking fantastic.
