Hi
My fantastic Christmas rose plant seem to be dying off in the summer do I let this this happen natural or can I take foliage off carefully? Can I plant bedding plants on the top over the summer ?

Kind regards clive

welcome to GoY.

it is struggling as it isn't getting enough water. Can you stand the pot in a bucket or washing up bowl of water overnight and see if it perks up. if it does then remove the oldest tastiest leaves but don't take more than a third off.

they are happier in dappled shade so if it is in full sun too then move it to a shadier spot.

I would be tempted to take the flowers off as they are starting to set seed and this takes up energy and water.

another thought, check the roots and see if there are any white grubs about 1cm long with a brown head munching on the roots. these are vine weevils.

If you want bedding plants it would probably be better to get another container for them and leave this one in a semi shaded spot for the summer, remembering to keep it watered. I would say that container isn't big enough to take bedding plants as well as it will be pretty well filled with the hellebore roots already.

How do I say thanks?
