We have a palm tree in the garden which is about 8ft high and it has 4 shoots growing out from the trunk a couple round the bottom and a couple towards the top does anyone know if we leave them alone or do they need cutting off.

Depends on the palm, but I suspect you have a Cordyline - they often do this, and its fine to leave them exactly as they are.
