Have just been given 4 bags of Homebase multi purpose compost " suitable for most purposes "' with a large yellow flower on the front.
I'm not really into flowers but is it suitable for the salad stuff I grow ?

Should be. The food content only lasts about 6 weeks so if you are planning on keeping stuff growing for longer than that, you would need to feed later on.
