we have a lavatera which is flowering with plenty of blooms but seems to be top-heavy. What should we do now that it is august.

Nothing you can do other than to support it with sticks or canes. I assume you didn't do the necessary annual prune in late April then, as growth starts - that's when it should be cut right down to within 2 inches or so of old wood at the base.
