Does anyone know when Crocus cancellatus can be planted? I've received some bulbs I ordered but am unsure if I need to wait until next year to plant these now and if so how they should be stored in the interim?

Thanks

Hi, C cancellatus is an autumn flowering species, and should have been planted in late summer, you could still just about plant spring flowering crocus now,but these should be planted in late summer in a bulb frame or alpine house, personally I would get in touch with the supplier to return them, and get a refund, Derek.

Hi Ads

When did you order the corms? As Derek says needed to have been planted several months ago...

We often buy things like this when the G/Cs are about to discard them as they have flowered in the packet. They obviously will not re-flower, but since they actually grow their roots and leaves after flowering has finished, they may be planted out now. They would not store until next year, except in the ground.

As said above C. Cancellatus is autumn flowering and would have been best planted around August time. It is a lovely crocus but needs a warm, dry summer dormancy so is not really recommended for most outdoor gardens in Britain. Don't worry too much though, Ads. Plant them NOW in a pot, water the compost and keep them protected under glass but just moist through the winter. As soon as they show leaves start feeding them with a liquid tomato feed until the leaves have died off in the spring, then keep them warm and dry and you should get flowers early next autumn.
Actually, these corms are normally only available from specialist nurseries so I am surprised that you have just received them but, hey ho, you have them now so enjoy them
