Thank you to all the people who commented on my heather problem, I didn't raise them up, but still need to find a way of growing stuff vertically, as I am limited in space.

In the summer you could use those plastic hanging bags with slits in the side that will make a tower of flowers. This wouldn't work for heathers as the previous folk said.
If you have walls or a fence you can fix troughs or pots to them and you can even get fittings designed to fix pots on drain pipes, though the ones I've seen advertised look a bit small and would need constant watering. Perhaps you could show us a photo of the space you have?
