Hi,can somebody please tell me what this plant is, we have lived here for 8 years, and it's never flowered before.

This looks like a Yucca plant. They are a popular landscaping plant here on Long Island, NY.

It is also colloquially known in the lower Midwest United States as "ghosts in the graveyard", as it is commonly found growing in rural graveyards and when in bloom the cluster of (usually pale) flowers on a thin stalk appear as floating apparitions.

Yucca gloriosa. It is known in the UK as....Yucca.

Watch those leaves, nasty spikey things that'll have your eye out.
