My Solanum ratonnetii mini standard which was a wonderful little tree died on me through last winter. Are they not a hardy tree??

No, absolutely not - they are frost sensitive, along with many other varieties of flowering solanum. Cuttings need to be taken and grown on in a greenhouse or indoors if you want plants for the following summer - or grow it in a conservatory.
