Hi there all you talented gardeners,
I've a question for you all and I'm hoping you can help.
These mini japenese acers are of the same variety. I can't remember their name but I've had them for at least a couple of years now. They were only about 8" tall when I got them. Last year they were both full of leaves but this year one has nothing at all on it. Has this plant died or is it because I haven't cared for it correctly? Hope I get some answers to say I can rescue it.

Hi Snoopdog yes they do. I transferred them as they got bigger. As you can see one of them is ok and enjoying itself but the other is not happy at all.

I think the one on the right is dead and the one on the left well on the way to being. Looks like you've been growing them in pots too small for the rootball. Have you kept them well watered and out of windy and full sun conditions?

Do you water them with rain water as they don't like tap water if it has lime in it also did you use ericaceous soil as the like Lime Free Soil :o))

Thank you ladies for your replies and I have to confess I've done none of these things except keep them out of the wind and brilliant sunshine. The one with leaves on has produced a lot more since I took the photo and is in fact looking very healthy. What I cannot understand is that my neighbour planted her two directly into her soil at the front of her bungalow and added nothing extra to them. They are open to the winds and hot sunshine everyday and yet hers are beautiful. She has had them for about 9yrs now so I guess they have established themselves well by now. I'll put some photos of them on here for you to see. In the meantime i will try the things you have suggested. Many thanks

Trees growing in the ground need far less care than trees growing in pots which, by their very nature can't hold the water in the way the soil can. If you are able to plant the healthier one in the ground this autumn.
