How do I identify a sucker on a rose?

It comes up from the base, often looks thornier than the other branches, and if you count the leaflets on each stalk there are more than on your other branches, ie 7 instead of 5. This is what I look for, but if I am wrong there are experts out there that will correct. Suckers grow fast and vigorously too. They need to be pulled off from right at the base where they come out of the main stem of the rose bush.
