I have garden mint, basil and parsley growing in a trough. Firstly, is this ok or will the mint overpower them? Secondly, all the plants seem lifeless, can I chop them down to a stalk? Will they regrow?

Exactly as Tugbrethil says - mint is lovely but will take over very quickly and outsize everything else.

Keep your pruning shears handy, since mint will definitely try to take over! Unless you change the soil in the trough, expect to have a trough of mint next year, with no space for anything else.
