Please help, I need to know what this plant is. It smells a little like mint.

Looks like Ricinus communis - if it is, do not eat.

I don't think it is Ricinus. Ricinus has red leaves that are more sawtooth, and the flower buds should be a brighter red than the leaves. Also the leaves should be joined instead of being seperate.

There is a plain green version of Ricinus, but you're right about the joining of the leaves at the bottom - what about Angelica?

the leaves look like Piptanthus evergreen laburnam? but I think thats in groups of 3

what about cleome 'spider flower'. this is a little like it.

I agree with seaburngirl, this is a Cleome hassleriana - the mint scent of the foliage is a giveaway, along with the flower buds
