i have a gentle hermoine which produced suckers this year. Having cut the suckers at base, I have been left with one main stem. i am not sure how i go about preventing more suckers while allowing the plant to produce more growth at base. Please help.

How do you know they were suckers? Were the "suckers" a more bronzed or reddish colour than the older growth? If they were, you have cut off perfectly good new shoots.
