have a photinia red robin but not fraserii. It is more like a tree. Can it be pruned

Yes it can and you will get more new red growth. You can trim it to the size suitable for its space. Do remember though that most shrubs and trees to look there best should be chosen to grow naturally to their full size eventually, to see them at their best. This one is suitable for pruning without losing the quality.
