A bit further than the spread of the crown of the tree, and pretty near the surface too.

The roots on mine are at least 2 - 3 meters all round and as Bamboo says they are close to the surface so if you want to grow plants underneath you have to find pockets or grow shallow rooted plants. I have Crocosmia "lucifer" under mine and also hardy geraniums (cranesbills).
