Leaf drop on my Sambucus nigra

The leaves on my plant dropped overnight ! they look slightly curled - any ideas on the reason for this ?

Is it in direct sun? They do prefer some shade. Is it in the ground or a pot? I lost my first one becase I planted it in the sun in too dry an area. The replacement is in shade for part of the day, in moister soil where it's doing well.
