I have a piece of land at the side of my house which is open plan to the small estate I live on. It is mostly laid to lawn and everytime before I mow it I have to pick up about 10 lots of dog's / cat's poo. Is there anything I can do to discourage them using it as a toilet?

It will be dogs rather than cats. You could try putting up a sign asking people to clean up after their dogs - or fence/hedge it off.
