i have a cistus in the garden that has split down the trunk it is about 15 years old and flowering now, could i cut it down after flowering to try and get it to regrow again?

Cistus does not respond at all well to drastic pruning - however, as the plant is now so old, and these are not long lived plants anyway, if you dislike the look of it as it is, then risk it, knowing that you may need to replace it.
