i am trying to grow melons in my greenhouse, the male flowers come through ok but females turn yellow and fall off before they flower.

Are you sure the females are falling off before they bloom? That's pretty rare, but it might happen with irregular watering, or extreme heat (in the case of cantaloupes). More likely is failure of the fruit after the flower opens--and they are usually only open for a day--due to lack of pollination.
