Free drained soil in full sun. It's a North American Prairie plant in origin so doesn't really like our relatively wet and mild winters. Slugs often bore out the swollen root base unfortunately but if you can get them to grow, they are lovely.
Unusual as the flowers open from the top of the spike downwards rather than the other way around.
