we have rhododenrons that are very old how can we cut them down and will they regrow if cut smaller

Most Rhododendrons (the larger leaved types) respond well to hard pruning however I suspect it's now a little late to do it. As soon as spring starts next year, cut hard back (the whole plant). Don't leave any parts unpruned as you need to force all cut parts to sprout.
