why has my acer got different sized leaves of the same plant? Mainly small
leaves but one branch has two leaves which are about five times larger than
the rest.

As Nicky says, remove the whole branch at the base which has the rogue leaves present.

The large leaves will be from the stem which has the more dleacte foliage cultivar grafted on, Remove any large large leaves or large leaved branches as these will outcompete the smaller wanter leaves
