my japanese cherry tree seems to have a 'honey like' substance seeping out

Welcome to GoY. With so little infomation it is difficult to give a diagnostic. A photo would help.
Is the substance on the leaves, twigs, branches or trunk? Any sign of insects? Aphids leave a sticky sweet residue. It could be a slime mould. It could be a bacterial canker.
Sorry I can't be of any more help.
I hope you find this info. useful.
