i have lost all the impatiens plants the last two years although they grew successfully all other years.I have very shallow sandy soil and infstations of ants and woodlice.

Either drought or late frosts - in London it would be drought, where you are, could it be frost? Impatiens hate to dry out and are particularly frost sensitive.
