I have just returned from holiday to find my 5 young silver birch trees infested by many hundreds of caterpillars who were stripping the leaves. I attach a photo. Bug Fee seemed to kill most of them but what are they; what can I do to stop a repetition; and do I need to do anything to save the trees?

I reckon they're probably sawfly larvae - an absolute plague of 'em on your trees there! Must have been a real shock on getting back home...
