I purchased 2 reasonsble size ceonothus plants from the garden centre approx 18in tall, outside in pots, brought them and wanted to plant out in a couple of weeks, kept watered sheltered at the side of the house both have dried up, leaves turning brown any suggestions on how to save £14 or was the money wasted?

Did you remove all the peat from the rootball and tease the roots out when you planted the shrubs, Tercol? If not, all the water you gave them will, very likely, just soaked the ground around the shrubs and run away into the soil. If you did not tease out the roots fully then I would suggest that you lift these Ceanothus and attend to the roots; soak them in a bucket of water before re-planting.

What I'm understanding from your post is that you kept the plants in pots until you were ready to plant, and they're still in those pots. If that's the case, they've either been somewhere they caught heavy late frosts, or have simply not been given sufficient water often enough. Soak them in buckets, cut them back and see if any growth arrives, but keep them very well watered.

They are still in pots, standing in water and we havent had any frost in fact dead opposite, ie very hot hence standing them in water, the soil is very damp, not soggy any chance they can be revived?

I suspect not, but scrape back some bark off the woody parts lower down - if its green beneath, there's some hope, if its brown and breaks easily, they're goners.

If they are standing in water they may be waterlogged, which produces similar results to underwatering as it prevents any air getting to the roots. If there is any green left try draining them and letting the compost almost dry out before watering again.

Thank you I will learn!,,,

I would cut a branch off and if it is green in the middle they are still alive. If there is then I would tease out the rootball and replant with some good compost. Good luck.
