You can improve the soil by adding as much humus rich material ( composted horse manure, soil conditioning compost, leaf mould, spent mushroom compost, anything like that) and by adding quite large quantities of horticultural grit. If, though, you have waterlogging on a regular basis, you may need to investigate having drainage installed.
