Leaves stripped and slime left almost always means snails or slugs! Go out at night with a flashlight and see if you can catch the nasty critters in the act. If they're the ones, get an appropriate bait--I prefer the ones with iron phosphate, because they are less likely to hurt pets and wildlife.
