Cherries hate root disturbance, and their roots run pretty close to the surface of the soil, which makes both weeding and plant growing immediately near it pretty impossible. Might be best to bark chip directly underneath it, say for a circumference round the trunk of 2/3 feet, and then plant from there outwards if you need to.
