thanks for your reply seaburngirl. The roots or whatever it was, was completely covering the whole of the mystery object. But I did say I have found 2 identical objects in different borders. The spade went cleanly through this thing with ease, but it is quite brittle to pull apart, but also very easy to do so. When freshly pulled apart it is bright pink, then exposed to air is quick to crust over and becomes a dark pink
