Familiar story. We bought a puppy and he's ruining my lawn with his urine. I deliberately bought a male dog because I know bitches urine causes this problem. Is there anything I can do to stop it happening? Could a change of his diet help? I'll patch up the damage once I feel I can stop it happening again.

the only reason bitch urine affects the lawn is because they squat to do it - usually, dogs cock their legs up a bush or a tree or something (which doesn't do the leaves any good either), though I think young dogs aren't too adept at that initially. You're supposed to be able to buy something called dog rocks to put in their drinking water to make the urine less acid, but I'm told that most dogs won't drink it! Worth a try, nothing else you can do.

a dog run is the only real true way of doing it and desexing him will make him just wee rather than mark his territory especialy if hes young.just let hin in your garden when you go in and tell him know if he goes to wee.

I agree with Noseypotter, the ONLY way to stop a dog from ruining your lawn is to keep him off it!

i have a lovley garden and 5 dogs and a dog run .ian looks like hes a dog owner. i must admit in these gardening shows ie ground force etc they never consider the dogs at all . the best i sore was a redicules sand bit with toys in it . can you imagine at 7am persisting down with rain trying to get your dog half way up the garden to wee in a sandpit.they also put toys in it .i laughed my socks of .

Hi Nosey, I have had G. Shepard's all my life and my uncle had a kennels and breeding business for 50 odd years. I learnt an awful lot from him during countless summer holidays, mucking out, walking and generally being a dogs body on his farm! Lol
