i have a walnut tree and i have noticed a large amount of gunge coming out of its stumps. what can this be and what can i do?

Stumps? What stumps? Are you saying it's been chopped down and the stumps are oozing, or are you talking about live branches on a growing tree?
also, what colour is the gunge? Reddish brown or just grey? Actually, a photo would be very helpful.
