keeping cordylines in check

I have a cordyline which has grown about 30 feet tall, close to the house. I understand the roots could affect the house foundations. If I cut the cordyline down to around 5ft, will it mean that the roots will stop growing and therefore no longer pose a possible problem.

I was told by a garden expert that by cutting it down it would grow new shoots, so the stump shouldn't be a problem should it ? Just forgot to ask him about the roots !
